Abstract
The ketogenic
diet (KD) has gained popularity as a weight loss method in recent years.
However, its use as a therapeutic approach in neurology dates back to the early
1900s when it was employed to control seizures. Although the KD fell out of
favor with the advent of pharmacological treatments, it has made a resurgence
due to its metabolic benefits, including improved immune response, regulation
of signal transduction, inflammatory pathways, and neurotransmission. Research
suggests that the KD may have therapeutic potential in various disorders, such
as mitochondrial diseases, metabolic disorders, and even cancer. In the field
of neurology, the KD has shown promise in the management of multiple sclerosis,
traumatic brain injury, dementia, and stroke. This narrative review aims to
summarize the current literature on the multifaceted roles of ketogenic diets
in neurology, focusing on their potential benefits for patients with brain
cancers and other neurologic diseases. The review explores the physiological
mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of the KD and provides insights
into its use as part of a comprehensive neurological treatment plan.
