Title: Multifunctionality of olive tree


The olive tree (Olea europea L.) is producing an excellent product, the olive oil, indispensable for our daily well-being. But it is also a tree that constitute the only culture of global importance being the olive tree is a symbol of peace and value, an element of strength and purification, of resistance to the ravages of time and wars, and it has always been a transcendent symbol of spirituality and sacredness. It is also evident that olive tree participates in the formation of a multiplicity of landscapes in Mediterranean basin.  In addition Olive growing does not contribute excessively to the production of CO2 but can help mitigate the effects of climate change maintaing or increasing the carbon (C) sequestration capacity as well as the productivity of agricultural systems. It also represents a real reservoir of biodiversity for animal species giving refuge and sustenance among the foliage, its gnarled trunk rich in cavities, and its imposing roots. For all the positive effects we can say that olive oil is good for health and the environment.
